This is an initiave we're running at our club to encourage members to play other games...:
After speaking to several clubbers last night, I have come up with a cunning plan! There are now several of us, who after years of playing pretty much nothing but 40k, have decided to embark upon the route to madness that is WFB! Things to remember! 1) This is about fun - no power lists to start please, just easy, 'get to know the rules' lists! 2) If you commit to the deadlines, please try to keep to them! I'd like to get this to the point where we have regular 'painting clinics' etc.. to help each other along - I'm the worlds worst for not playing with fully painted armies, and having a target I think will help! 3) If you feel that you are Current Edition Literate (ie. you've been playing pretty much all WFB for the last 12/18 months) - let me know and I'll mark against your name C.E.L! Heres the plan: Between now and the 1st Thursday of November (which is Bonfire night no less), each participant needs to have at least 750 points built and at least undercoated, to start playing! So far we have: 1) - Darryl (that's me!) - Chaos Warriors WEEK ONE VPs - 531 2) - Matt S. - Wood Elves - WEEK ONE VPs - 2356 3) - Darrell Henson - Vampire Counts 4) - Gobbo - High Elves (sneaky edit ) WEEK ONE VPs - 2100 5)- Rob Henson - Chaos Warriors - WEEK ONE VPs - 1661 6)- Studge - Dwarves 7) - Rich Robinson - Or(c)s - MarkW's Mate - TBA!9) - Andy - Orcs / Vampire Counts / Chaos 10) - ChrisT - Skaven (when they're released) - C.E.L. 11) - Deadpool - Orcs & Goblins C.E.L 12) - Gripper - Empire or Lizardmen C.E.L 13) - DangerRat - Skaven (when they're released) C.E.L 14) - DinoDean (Steve) - Ogres WEEK ONE VPs - 890 15) - John - Orcs & Goblins WEEK ONE VPs - 40 16) - Matt H - WoC - WEEK ONE VPs - 197 17) - Dave - DE / TBA - WEEK ONE VPs 1350 1 - Matt G - WE - WEEK ONE VPs - 268Whilst this is mainly meant for those who have played very little WFB, if you are a seasoned player, and want to start a new army, or just freshen up the one you have, please feel free to post! What we expect to see: At least a post on here (with or without photos) of what you want to play - and then a committment to meet the target! Last night saw the kick off of the games, and what a couple of games it was! The match ups for the first game were as follows: Rob (WoC) v Steve (OK) - 1150 to 645 VPs - Poor Steve managed to mullah Rob's puny humans, only to have a torrent of magical abuse for his sins! Darryl (WoC) v Matt S (WE)- 0 to 1306 VPs - The score line tells the story! Even with a Irresistable Force turn one and then three miscasts, Matt's Dryads kicked #bleep# - it helped that his entire army was resistant to the spells I had! Paul W (HE) v John (O&G) -950 to 40 VPs Poor John! it seemed that despite a valliant effort, the traitor Gobbo managed to get his head around the pointy eared approach! Session two saw three more players join in, and John having to go to work - noce to meet you John! The match ups were: Matt S Vs Rob - 1050 to 511 VPs Paul W Vs Steve - 1150 to 245 VPs Dave (DE) Vs Matt H (O&G) - 1350 to 197 VPs Darryl Vs Matt G (WE) - 531 to 268 VPs - after the kicking at Matt's hands in game one, I had dim hope for this - more Wood Elves! This time though, I slightly changed the army (dropping the mark off the sorcerer helped), and managed to kill lots! Highlight for me was my Chaos Spawn hammering the War Dancers with a maximum SEVEN attacks which saw them off! But the Waywatchers in a tower picked off my Marauders one by one until there was only three left... not a good thing for me! I've took pictures, which will be online later. I had a great time, and hope that those of you who took part did as well - please, post your experiences from last night, what you liked or disliked. The pledge for next month is: by December 3rd, you should aim to have your 750 points fully painted (to your ability) and also have another 250 points AT LEAST undercoated! Paul changed his Army a little from the original list to the following: Level 2 Mage with Seer Staff of Saphrey 10 Sea Guard with Full Command 10 Swordmasters with Full Command 2 x 5 Shadow Warriors RBT He's used the full 750pts He's now made a start on the next jump up to 1000pts. Using the plastic bits he had left over from my Sea Guard he's built himself a Noble (Ships Captain) with a Greatsword & longbow, adding the Armour of Caledor makes him 124pts. If he gives his 10 Sea Guard shields thats another 10pts spent, (I think I'll attach my noble to this unit to beef them up a bit and add another 4 Seaguard and the War Banner (First Amongst equals) which is another 72pts. This leaves me a grand total of 44pts to tinker with.) Take 2 for last nights games (abridged version) Played newbie John first with his Orcs & Goblins, first piece of advice get your own dice! (John borrowed mine & his rolls were absolutely shocking! even worse than yours Richard, so really, really bad!). Needless to say with such rotten luck the Orcs & Goblins got a bit of a hiding (nasty Elves!) Game two played Steve's Ogres and got lucky! (I mean mega Hartley's Jammy). Steve didn't realise that you don't have to charge the nearest target, so was a little suprised that I bypassed one unit of Ogres to hit another in the flank! (Elves really are nasty). Somehow I got away with this one, which is doubly suprising as Steve pulled off 4 successive dispels rolling either an 11 or 12 each time on only 2D6 (so nearly as Jammy as me then!) I have to agree with Matt, Daz has come up with a cracking idea here (well he was due one eventually lol!) looking forward to joining the other 750ers again next week (if I can make it). I'll post th e photo's here (if possible), as I think this is a great way to socialise within a large club, and also show what group support can do!

Sounds fantastic.
We, at gobstyks, occasionally have a low points day and get to play loads of games in the time allowed. It does break up the usual routine of playing from 2000-2999 points (as in fantasy battle rather than fantasy skirmish). Sounds like great fun.

Pete,
It's turning out to be a great way of getting into a new system - quite a few of us have WFB armies, but have never really played a lot! I'll update this as we go!

I'm actually finally getting into fantasy at my club (after starting to play 2+ editions ago and drifting out as my then local club lacked players)
I've found one of my club members has 3 Fantasy armies, of which one is high elves (whom i've begun to collect) He's agreed to bring his models for 2 armies one night and play me through with his models. We encourage that sort of thing for specialist games too, several of us have things like 2 INQ warbands, 2 Necro gangs etc, and we can teach new players with our models. keep up the good work! B

What a great idea, we recently did a similar thing at WCGC. We are currently focussing on the younger players, and trying to get them to build some simple to run lists and get some fun gaming in.

I too am just in the process of putting together an army for WFB, High Elves in my case, my first in 16 years!!!
The thing is I used to play a lot, right up to 1993 when I quit, and have not played WFB since. Though I never had the High Elf Army that I actually wanted, Dark Elves, Necromantic and Skaven yes, the old pointy eared ones no. So fingers crossed that I can hopefully get a usable army together in the very near future, still need to buy a fair old bit although I have acquired a reasonable amount of second hand miniatures recently, so I am well on my way army building wise. The thing is due to time all of it will be assembled though non of it at this point will be anything other than base coated. That's the problem of living in the real world though. Tony.

I played my first battle for 2+ editions last night and really enjoyed it, I have a good incentive to get things sorted, in Feburary we're hosting heats of the Yorkshire open, I need to get everything sorted if I want to play in them!
Might be worth having some date to aim for, we run regular one day events, it means that often people will come to club nights and paint for a couple of hours, means they get their army ready for a particular event. Any news on how your one's going Daryl? Ben

Yes, having a fixed date for army completion in mind really helps you to focus. You could also try writing a short blog, detailing your building & painting. Myself and another member of our club have recently started a painting blog on our website. It will follow the progress of Smiffee's 40K mechanized Orks, and my WFB Dark Elves. If you wanna take a look then the link is below. The next installement are due to be photographed at club this week so shall be up by the weekend.
