Wreckfest – Unique and Challenging

How many racing games are there out there? certainly enough to count with a pair of fingers. But if asked how many “unique” racing games are out there? of course the answers are fewer than imagined. Many developers and publishers feel comfortable with the simple racing formula they present. But apparently, this does not apply to Bugbear Entertainment through its ambitious racing game – Wreckfest. After going through a fairly long period of early access, finally Wreckfest officially came to the PC last year and the console in August this year.

Instead of presenting racing as the main focus, Wreckfest actually makes “destruction” as its main attraction. Present as FlatOut’s spiritual successor who presents a similar fascination in the past, Wreckfest has increasingly refined this and seems to provide a much more massive attraction. However, despite everything we mentioned before, what exactly does Wreckfest offer? and why do we call it “addictive destruction racing game”? This review will discuss it thoroughly.

Race Full of Destruction!

For those of you who grew up with the FlatOut franchise, Wreckfest feels like it has a game formula, not surprisingly, considering that both games were born through the same developer. It’s just that Wreckfest is present feels to have a formula that is more “leaner” and more “dense”. Wreckfest is not a racing game that has a variety of modes and abundant features, but does it feel negative? We think not, why? instead of presenting abundant but empty features, through Bugbear try to present a variety of content that feels more minimal than FlatOut, but feels much denser and maximum.

Full of destruction, as a racing game, uniquely, only these words are the most suitable to describe Wreckfest. Unlike Need For Speed or other racing games that make “fast racing” the main attraction, Wreckfest is second to that. The priority Bugbear wants to offer here is “destruction, destruction and speed”, and that is certainly very unusual.

This is also supported by the physical physic quality that is served, where every destruction that is presented, always looks terrible at the same time riveting. Crash-by collision that happened wrapped nicely through a physical presentation that must be recognized, looks quite realistic for a racing game. You can clearly see the damage to the car through the impact of a loud impact from another car, or because it accidentally hit an immovable object.

Feels Challenging!

It must be admitted indeed that Bugbear is able to present various small aspects of the destruction in sufficient detail. The leftover debris of destroyed cars such as bumpers, doors, and other pieces of iron scattered on the asphalt can even make an impact. yes, you can accidentally slip and even bounce when accidentally crashing into the debris.

In addition, the devastation that can affect the performance of the car itself. Hard hits that damage the suspension, for example, cause the suspension to malfunction and the car will be very vulnerable to collisions. Other impacts in the front corner of the car that damage the front wheels also, for example, make the car more difficult to control. Various aspects of the destruction that makes Wreckfest have its own identity that is not owned by any racing game.

Wreckfest actually has fairly simple controls, but still, it’s not a racing game that is friendly for casual gamers. With just normal difficulty, Wreckfest is able to present a variety of challenges, which often makes us scratch our heads. One thing is for sure, “nothing is certain” in Wreckfest, in front of the last lab, even in front of the finish line with a victory that is in sight, all possibilities can still happen.

A fast race that is presented feels very balanced, with a high stat car will not guarantee victory, as well as a low stat car, it does not rule out the possibility that he is actually able to obtain victory. Working hard to maintain the number 1 position in 11 laps, but due to a little negligence it was immediately pushed to the last position.

The reality? it is indeed very likely to occur, any existing momentum must be considered and utilized appropriately. Once screwed up? it could have been a victory that was in plain sight just vanished. It can even directly push you from the leading position directly into the backward, everything is very possible in this game.

Still feels less challenging? Wreckfest embeds a system of difficulty levels that can be arranged at will. In addition to allowing access to the Extra Hard difficulty level, the difficulty level system can also turn off existing assists so that the existing racing scheme feels much more difficult and realistic.

Brutal and fast, it seems that is what you must have in Wreckfest, acting responsive and aggressive is the main key to winning. Through the racing mode, you not only have to compete quickly, but also aggressive in completing various challenges. The challenge usually tells you to destroy your opponent’s car, knock your opponent’s car against the object, do the best lap, to hit the opponent’s car until it rotates 180 degrees.

At each race always provides a challenge that stores rewards in the form of star, XP, and extra currency, of course. With a variety of tempting rewards that are enough to be missed, you will always be encouraged to complete challenges while holding on to be at the forefront.

As we said before, the actual race is not really the main focus on Wreckfest, besides competing quickly, it has various modes that look much more interesting. Not only obliging you to always be at the forefront, the various modes often force you to be the most brutal and aggressive.

Like this battle royale-style derby bus, for example, which will force you to survive while destroying as many other buses as possible. Or this van mode, for example, which requires you to withstand the chase and hit of the high-speed trucks. There are still so many modes that require you to play brutal and aggressive, some of which you can see through a series of images below.

All of these unique modes are summarized in career mode, in total there are 5 career mode sessions that you can access, from the low tier to the high tier. Each class in career mode stores a variety of interesting modes in it, but to access higher modes, points are required to be unlocked. Yes, you must earn enough points through the mode that was accessed first in order to access the next mode, before finally switching to a class or a higher level in career mode.

For those of you who want to build their own challenges, there is a custom mode that allows you to realize this. You can determine the mode, circuit, level of difficulty, up to the number of drivers competing. Surely this is a mode that is suitable for those of you who just want to have fun or just do madness.

To go through challenges in higher and more difficult modes, you certainly need a more sophisticated car or enough upgrades. Thanks to XP and the currency you already have, you can buy a new car or upgrade an existing car to improve performance. Not only upgrading, the currency also functions to make customizations, indeed the customization features presented are not too diverse and “wow”, but it feels enough to just give the appearance of the car to look more fashionable or vice versa.

Spry Eradicate Bug & Glitch

A specter of the most hated developers and gamers themselves of course there are problems with the game in question. Usually the problem is present in the first version of the game in question, and it also seems to gnaw Wreckfest. As media reviewers, we received a code review before the official console version of Wreckfest launched on August 23, and we got the PlayStation 4 version.

Bugbear said the initial version would still be imperfect, and sure enough, he was still present very prematurely and was full of obstacles. Starting from the texture bug, to the infinity bug loading which was very annoying, the infinitie loading problem even always appeared after 5-8 times a match, and of course always forced us out of the game by force. Not only when it will start the match, the infinity loading loading bug also often appears when choosing a car to use.

But fortunately, as promised, through the first patch released on the first day, Bugbear was able to eliminate almost all existing problems. You will not rarely encounter many serious bugs & glitches, there will be no more disturbing infinity loading. Surely this is a step that deserves thumbs up, where Bugbear & THQ Nordic ensure Bugbear is released with no serious problems.

Visual Pervading With Extreme Ruin Effects

With sufficient development time and mature early access, Bugbear managed to present the maximum quality of the visual game concoction. Together with the aspect of destruction as its main attraction, this identity is further strengthened by a visual appearance that looks good.

Powered by soft-body dynamics technology, each destruction can be presented perfectly. Every debris, the scattered iron, the body of the car that was destroyed, and sharing other objects looked very realistic. various general details such as texture, shadow, lighting, fog, reflection all of which also look slick and able to present the atmosphere that they should. As proof of that? you can see every screenshot that we offer in this review.

What other “must” attraction should a racing game have? certainly is a soundtrack that is able to drive adrenaline to the highest level. For that matter, of course Wreckfest is able to present it quite well, every fast action full of destruction that you do will be accompanied by the music of the thunderous enthusiasm of several famous musicians, one of them is Cyan Kicks.

But unfortunately, unlike Need For Speed, Forza Horizon, or other racing games that are full of myriad soundtracks. Wreckfest has a very limited soundtrack, and can probably be counted with just a pair of fingers. There is no other genre too, Wreckfest only has a rock genre to list its soundtrack, but maybe Bugbear did it intentionally to do so to be able to present the strong impression of “destruction” presented by Wreckfest. But still, the list of soundtracks that are present feels very minimal and is always playing repetitively.

Conclusion

Wreckfest comes as a racing game that feels fresh, where instead of racing being the main focus, it highlights the main attraction. An innovation that actually looks simple indeed, but can be executed carefully and ultimately feels very addictive. Bugbear’s actions in overcoming various obstacles through day 1 patch on the first day of the release of this game are also very deserved thumbs up.

But even so, Wreckfest is still not a completely perfect racing game, it still has content that feels still incomplete. The soundtrack which is supposed to be one of the main attractions of a racing game is also not as much as expected. But in spite of all these problems, Wreckfest is still a racing game that you must try, especially for those of you who want to release your fatigue by “destroying” something.
